In this follow up post on the bunker shotI am covering the crucial setup piece you need to get off the beach! To help you pack up your beach chair and get off the sandy area quickly you need to understand the purpose of the sand wedge and how it was designed.
On every wedge you have what is called bounce. What this means is the angle between the flange and the leading edge of the wedge when placed on a flat surface. Notice the picture below. (credit GolfBidder)
This is critical to understand because depending on the different sand types you face (soft, medium, or hard) is going to dictate how you setup. For example, with a hard pan lie where the sand is really hard you would want to setup with little bounce so the wedge can dig into the sand.
The opposite is true for very soft sand. With a soft lie you would want to lay the wedge back so you can allow for the bounce to kick in preventing it from digging too deep. This will allow you to take the proper amount of sand to carry the ball out of the bunker.
Now for the good stuff, watch today's video to learn how you should setup for a standard bunker shot, so you will have more successful trips out of the bunker and leave the lounging on the beach at the Beach!
